JCCC Las Pintas Nursing Service Learning 2017
Welcome to Justin Gust's Personal Fundraising Page!
It is truly amazing how lives can be impacted by just spending a week with people you do not know...
For those of you who know me, you know that I have been to Mexico many times in my life. However, there is a reason why I continue to return year after year with this Service Learning project in particular; it's all about impact. It is hard to find the right words to describe the amazing feelings and changes that come about when two cultures meet in a positive way. It is a learning experience for both in so many different ways and it reshapes the way we perceive our own worlds and realities. It isn't "us" helping "them" but rather it's "we" coming together. The students, staff, and volunteers like myself return with a unique perception that many others in our community never experience. The learning and growth that takes place during this project is priceless and I personally can say that my life would not be the same had I not participated in this project as a student and the following years as a volunteer.
Please join us in our project by helping it continue on for future students to be able to share such an incredible learning experience.
During our spring break, we will travel to the Mexican squatter community of Las Pintas to use our nursing skills to help people live healthier lives. We will screen over 1,000 people for diabetes, hypertension, respiratory illness, and cervical and breast cancer. We will also train Mexican volunteer Health Promoters to educate and care for their neighbors.
We choose to spend our spring break serving others because:
- As nurses, we care about the health challenges of people born into poverty.
- As students, we will grow in our nursing skills.
- As people, we are energized and encouraged by the warm welcome we receive. We expect to gain more than we give!
JCCC has led this project for 19 years. We do everything we can to hold down our expenses, even sleeping on cots in a community center. But the per-person cost of $1,300 is still more than most students can afford. We also need around $4,000 for medications, lab fees, blood glucose monitors, and other supplies.
In our pay-it-forward model, each group also leaves some funding for next year's students. It's our way of making sure that our Mexican friends won't lose this chance to receive health care.
Dr. Carmen Rodriguez, our Mexican partner, said, "Poverty is a call to action - for the poor and the wealthy alike - a call to change the world so that many more have enough to eat, have adequate shelter, have access to education and health care, have protection from violence, and a voice in what happens in their communities. The JCCC project has given our community hope."
Thank you for reading this far and for helping us, if you can, to bring hope to this community!
We are so grateful for every contribution made by family, friends & colleagues . Last week while in Las Pintas we were often told by people in the community how important the JCCC teams have meant to them. We promised them that the teams would return thanks to our donors!
Each year we identify new critical needs and this year we were able to provide a wheel chair to Chuy. He has cerebral palsy and is not able to walk He had not left his house since May He and his mom were overjoyed & so grateful for the wheelchair
Gratitude & Joy
Our amazing team of nursing students, faculty, alumni & volunteers worked so well together this week as they delivered health screenings for 758 people in the impoverished community of Las Pintas. They identified several people that had BP of over 180/100 and some had blood glucose readings greater than 300. They referred these people to the clinic at Centro Integral where our team helped to provide much needed treatment. In the clinic 150 people were seen and treated and 44 women had Cervical & Breast cancer screening.
I was so proud of this team and their ability to put the needs of the the people they served first. Students & alumni shared that this trip was transforming. They return with greater confidence and cultural sensitivity in their delivery of nursing care.
Your support helped this team & future students to participate in this program. Muchas Gracias
Our team of 23 are all working together as a great team. Today we are out in Las Pintas screening for diabetes , hypertension, and providing health education. The people are grateful and kind.
We are so thankful for all your support to help keep this program going
Our plane is here and the sun is peeking over the horizon. Just over an hour from departing KC on our way to Las Pintas!! Thank you all for your support and spreading the word. Last checked we've reached >60% of our goal!! We all truly appreciate your support, both financially and emotionally. Without our friends and family pushing us and supporting us, this trip wouldn't be possible. Mexico here we come.
